HISTORY
Following passage of the 1975 Virginia Child Abuse Legislation, efforts were made in the Roanoke Valley to create an organization which would address the problem of child abuse and neglect by:
- identifying maltreated children
- coordinating area services
- developing innovative programs
- promoting public awareness and disseminating information about the problem
In 1977, Junior League of Roanoke Valley and Family Service of Roanoke Valley got behind this effort and helped to establish Prevent Child Abuse Roanoke Valley Inc., which has evolved into the Children's Advocacy Center of the Roanoke Valley, Inc.
MISSION STATEMENT:
- To prevent and reduce the incidence and trauma of child maltreatment, and to provide support to families through education.
Core Values:
- All children deserve to be protected and live free from the trauma of abuse or neglect.
- We respect the innocence of children, and we will do everything within our power to protect it.
Guiding Principles:
- We are committed to protecting all children from maltreatment, regardless of factors such as race, religion, and economics.
- We are committed to preventing the revictimization of abused children by excessive interviews, lack of communication between agencies, incomplete investigations, and inaccessibility of immediate and long-term medical and therapeutic treatment.
- We will act with honesty and integrity, and will advocate on behalf of children in our interactions with all people and agencies.
Goals:
- To make Roanoke Valley citizens aware of the existence, indications of, effects of and appropriate responses to child maltreatment.
- To educate Roanoke Valley citizens in order to promote healthy child rearing practices.
- To support children and families during divorce, separation, and custody disputes.
- To reduce the trauma to all reported child abuse victims by decreasing repeated interviewing by multiple persons.
- To increase positive emotional closing of the case for the victims and their families, so that they may go on and lead a positive healthy life.
- To increase caregivers’ knowledge of community resources for therapeutic support.
- To advocate for effective public and private sector child abuse prevention policies and services.
